A former chaplain at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, has been handed a hefty 60-year prison sentence after being convicted of child pornography charges. Michael Downs, 71, recorded the sexual abuse of a minor, which led to his arrest and subsequent guilty plea earlier this year, according to the Department of Justice.
In a move that serves as a stark warning to those who exploit children, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Leigha Simonton, underscored the severity of the case. "This is an incredibly important case involving shocking and abhorrent conduct," Simonton stated. Moreover, U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman, who sentenced Downs on Thursday, imposed a lifetime of supervised release following the prison term, reflecting the gravity of the crimes committed by the ex-chaplain, per the Department of Justice.
Details of the case, which came to light in January 2023, revealed that a 17-year-old girl confided to her aunt about the sexual abuse by Downs, which he recorded on an iPad. These chilling developments emerged after the minor's courageous step to speak out against the abuse. The investigation subsequently discovered numerous disturbing images and videos on a hard drive at the Downs residence, detailing the explicit content.
The successful capture and prosecution of Downs was hailed by HSI Dallas Special Agent in Charge Lester R. Hayes Jr. as an exemplar of stern accountability. "While preying on the vulnerability of our youth, those in positions of public trust should expect the most stern accountability for their actions," Hayes said. A strong partnership with local enforcement was vital in bringing the perpetrator to justice and preventing future harm to children, as per the Department of Justice.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Aisha Saleem, who led the prosecution, emphasized the collaborative efforts of Homeland Security Investigations and the Fort Worth Police Department in ensuring that justice was delivered. This case not only reflects the resolve of law enforcement agencies in tackling such heinous crimes but also serves as a reminder of the protective net woven to safeguard the innocence of children from those who would do them harm.
