Just days before Christmas, tragedy struck the Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale as a devastating fire engulfed the sanctuary. The blaze which began Saturday night was spotted by a vigilant bystander, prompting a swift response from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue units. "Just after 7 o’clock, we were called to a report of a structure fire," shared FLFR Deputy Chief Garrett Pingol, as WSVN reported.
A total of twenty-five units converged on the scene at Northwest Ninth Street and 12th Avenue to battle the flames that had risen to fill the two-story worship center. Despite the potential for disaster, there were no injuries reported as the church was empty at the time of the incident. "It was a fire isolated to the first floor of the church," Deputy Chief Pingol stated, per Spot on Florida.
The absence of an early fire alarm added to the severity of the situation, a frightening detail highlighted by officials. It was the careful observation of a resident that led to the emergency services being alerted to the danger. Crews worked not only to extinguish the flames but also to manage the subsequent cleanup and evaluation of the church's structure. Despite the lack of apparent damage from the exterior, the true extent was masked by the building's size, with Pingol pointing out that the outside view is "no example of what occurred inside in the main auditorium or sanctuary of the church", according to WSVN.
Now with their place of worship in disrepair, the congregation faces a somber holiday season having to seek alternative arrangements for their services. "Our hearts go out to them and their followers of the church, especially this time of the year," Pingol expressed, acknowledging the impact on the community during a period meant for gathering and celebration. Instead of in-person worship, a Facebook Live event was scheduled for Christmas Eve, as members looked forward to coming together virtually in a moment of unity and perseverance. The investigation into the cause of the fire is currently ongoing, as per WSVN.
