A Fort Pierce man has been ordered to be held in custody pending trial after allegedly engaging in a string of armed robberies targeting U.S. Postal Letter Carriers. Jamal Travon Brown Weathers, 23, faces charges of conspiracy to commit postal property robbery, among other related offenses, according to a federal criminal complaint.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Shaniek Mills Maynard decided on detaining Weathers, as detailed by authorities. The alleged crimes took place across multiple counties in Florida, including St. Lucie, Brevard, Orange, and Miami-Dade, from November 19, 2022, through October 21, 2023. Weathers, alongside Bernard Jerome Davis, III, and Jalen Dennis Elliott, reportedly participated in armed robberies.
These incidents led to a collaborative investigation involving the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and multiple Florida law enforcement agencies. The case is being prosecuted by Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Lineberger. Officials, ranging from the U.S. Attorney to various county sheriffs, announced Weathers' detention and brought to light the ongoing fight against postal crimes.
As part of a nationwide effort to safeguard postal workers and clamp down on mail-related crimes, the U.S. Postal Service launched the Project Safe Delivery campaign earlier this year. Currently, a reward of up to $150,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrests and convictions of those committing postal crimes, a recent attempt to curb the spike in offenses.
The campaign initiated by postal authorities seeks to encourage the public to come forward with any information, which can be reported through the USPIS website or by phone.
