Police in Framingham, Massachusetts are on the lookout for five teenage suspects following an early morning smash-and-grab at a local vape shop. In a brazen act caught on surveillance tape, the group is seen shattering the storefront of Framingham Vape & Smoke shop with a rock, before hustling inside to pilfer approximately $1,000 worth of merchandise, as reported by Boston 25 News.
The break-in took place around 4:30 a.m Tuesday on Worcester Rd., with the culprits spending barely a minute inside before fleeing the scene. Police have said that the suspects, believed to be juveniles and consisting of both boys and girls were mostly clad in hoodies. They not only made off with vape products but also attempted to pry open the cash register, according to NBC Boston. Despite efforts by K9 teams to track down the teens, their search came up empty.
The incident follows a string of similar robberies in the Boston area, including recent thefts in East Boston and West Roxbury. Speaking to the escalation of such crimes, Framingham Police Deputy Chief Sean Riley noted, "This has definitely become something that has picked up in the recent past," in a statement to Boston 25 News.
Investigators are relying on the public to help identify the suspects. The group managed to obscure their faces with masks and hoods, but "some of them had some pretty distinct clothing on that we’re hoping people can identify them, and let us know," Riley explained, to NBC Boston. For the shop's employees, the break-in represents not only a financial hit but also a concern for the store’s reputation and future security. Prakash Prajapati, a worker at the smoke shop, shared his worries about the impact on customer perception following the robbery, in an interview with 7NEWS.
Authorities are urging anyone with information on the break-in or the identity of these suspects to get in touch with the Framingham Police Department. With detailed surveillance footage in hand, and a community on alert, law enforcement continues to piece together clues in hopes of apprehending those responsible.
