The city of Garland’s landscape is set to receive a series of significant upgrades, including a revamped Central Library and two modernized fire stations, as a part of its 2019 Build Garland bond program. As the community looks towards the future, these projects promise to enhance local services and facilities to meet changing demands and expectations.

Garland's Central Library is undergoing a transformative renovation, with a promise to deliver a contemporary interior and modernized facilities, including a revamped children’s area complete with a slide, a striking grand staircase, and high-tech multipurpose rooms. Library services remain operational through the Central Library Express and a convenient city hall kiosk, despite the ongoing construction slated to wrap up by late 2024, according to the City of Garland.

On the public safety front, both Fire Station 1 and 6 are on deck for major makeovers. With the design phase nearly finished, Fire Station 1 is expected to break ground in 2024, situated strategically to enhance emergency response times. The new design includes features that prioritize firefighter safety and the ability to house advanced firefighting apparatus. Fire Station 6, which is also earmarked for a design overhaul, is projected to be operational by the spring of 2024 and will boast upgraded living and operations spaces.

The over-50 crowd can also look forward to fresh designs at the Garland Senior Activity Center, with plans in motion to revamp the existing facility into a state-of-the-art complex for leisure and community engagement. The project will move through its design phase in the coming year. Meanwhile, the Hollabaugh Recreation Center, nearing construction completion, includes a gym and newly outfitted multipurpose room—set to become a hub of activity come 2024.

Not to be left out of the upgrades is the recreational sphere with the commencement of construction on Garland’s Surf & Swim aquatic center. The city hints at a water lover's haven, complete with a lazy river and splash pads, that will take shape at 440 W. Oates Road. Additionally, Garland's bibliophiles can anticipate the new West Garland Library, a modern testament to architecture and literacy set to open doors in early 2025 at Hollabaugh Park.
