Georgetown, Texas, often hailed as the nation's fastest-growing city, has taken a proactive step toward addressing its swelling population and the accompanying traffic concerns. Earlier this month, the City Council approved the Georgetown Future Mobility Plan aimed at guiding the city's development of roads, pathways, and other transportation infrastructure for the next two to three decades.

The vote, taken on December 14, ushered in a comprehensive approach to managing the city's traffic data. It identifies several high-crash locations and sections where bottlenecks occur, suggesting realignments and changes in road classifications, among other strategies. The plan has come into focus because of Georgetown's remarkable growth, marked by the city's ranking as the fastest-growing city by the US Census Bureau in 2022, and 2023, as per a report by CBS Austin.

The mobility strategy includes a list of prioritized projects specifying which intersections need upgrades and where traffic signals should be improved. This was deemed necessary in light of the extensive population increase since 2015 which has given rise to new employment centers, and residential zones, and has altered the city's traffic patterns noticeably.

"We model it out 10 years, 15 years, 25 years, right. So there’s not necessarily a plan of when these roads would come in. It’s as it develops and as it’s needed, right. So if we see a dip in development or growth we’re not going to go ahead and build these roads," Lua Saluone, Georgetown transportation manager, said in a statement obtained by KXAN
