Archer, 26, from Griffin, died on December 13 at Coastal State Prison following an altercation with another inmate, a mere days before his slated early release in 2024, leaving behind a young daughter he'll never get to see or raise.
As the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) confirms the death and hands off the case to the Office of Professional Standards for investigation, Michael Archer remains in the dark about a specifics surrounding his son's untimely demise. In an interview with 11Alive, the elder Archer described his final conversation with his son on December 11, hinting at trouble but getting no details due to Ryan's fears of retaliation.
An advocate group called They Have No Voice, founded almost 4.5 years ago by Susan Burns, has been tracking causes and manners of death for inmates since 2017. Burns claims Georgia prisons have seen more than 30 homicides in 2023 alone, a significant increase from previous years. "We're four times the level of homicides they had in 2018," she told 11Alive. Both Michael Archer and Burns cite understaffing as a critical issue plaguing GDC facilities.
"An understaffed prison is a very dangerous place," Burns said, a sentiment echoed by Michael Archer who heard that "prisoners are more or less just running the show." Archer's body has been taken to the county coroner and will then be transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to determine the official cause of death, according to a statement by the GDC obtained by WSAV. The GDC has not released further information due to the active investigation.
