In a macabre twist of events, a driver was found in a restaurant parking lot with a deceased pedestrian in the passenger seat of his car after a crash in Dallas, Texas. The alarming discovery occurred on Saturday night in the 8700 block of West Freeway at a Jack in the Box, where 31-year-old Nestor Joel Lujan Flores was detained, as reported by WFAA.

Authorities said the call came in at around 11 p.m., indicating a car crash with the driver passed out at the wheel. Upon arrival, White Settlement police officers discovered not only the impaired driver but also the body of a man next to him in the vehicle, which had extensive damage to its front end, hood, and windshield. Chief Christopher Cook described the scene, saying, "The officer saw the body laying upside down in the seat, with its head laying on the floorboard and both legs missing below the knees", per WFAA.

The driver, Flores, appeared to be "unbalanced, swaying and heavy-footed" and was later found to be slurring his speech. He told officers that he was waiting for his brother to give him a ride, according to WFAA. Unaware of his location, Flores claimed to have struck an animal in Dallas, not realizing he had hit a pedestrian, Hoodline reported. The victim was identified as 45-year-old Terry Ivory.

Using surveillance footage, investigators were able to piece together Flores's movements before the incident, including footage from a Flock camera showing his car at an intersection in Arlington before the wreck. "So from 6:01 p.m., we believe he drove into Dallas County, was likely involved in a collision at I-30, Cockrell Hill, and then gets in our city around 8 o'clock," Chief Cook said, according to Hoodline. Dallas County Sheriff's Office deputies also located human remains near the I-30 and Cockrell Hill Road, which they believe to be connected to the incident.

Flores is currently in custody at the White Settlement Jail on pending charges of intoxication manslaughter and possibly failure to stop and render aid. As the investigation continues, authorities expressed their frustration with the avoidable nature of this tragedy. "It's very frustrating," Cook said, "This scene was very hard for our teams, just to even work a case like this. Really, what the frustration for our team is, is these are avoidable." He emphasized the importance of making responsible decisions to prevent such unnecessary losses, per WFAA.
