In a troubling breach of trust within a community dedicated to the education and protection of its youth, Greenville High School robotics instructor Corey Lane Bankston has been arrested on disturbing charges. Bankston was taken into custody on Thursday by the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office, facing multiple charges connected to child pornography. The arrest has raised concerns and prompted a swift response from local authorities and the Greenville Independent School District, according to FOX 4 News.
Details emerging from the incident reveal that Bankston was arrested on five counts related to the possession of child pornography. Serving as a leader in the high school's robotics program, his alleged actions have now overshadowed his educational contributions, casting a shadow over not only his career but also the institution's safeguarding measures. Sheriff Terry Jones unambiguously expressed his stance: “I will not tolerate predators preying on any child. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty but if you are found guilty of this type of crime, there is not a long enough sentence that can be served”, as per Herald Banner.
Following the arrest, the embattled employee has been placed on administrative leave by Greenville ISD, which also confirmed their full cooperation with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation. Echoing the district's commitment to student welfare, the GISD's communications department stated, “A student who wishes to meet with the school counselor can go to the counseling office and visit with them,” according to Herald Banner.
As investigations continue, the potential for additional charges looms over Bankston, who currently faces one count of possession of child pornography and four counts of possession with intent to promote. Possession of child pornography counts as a third-degree felony, while promotion of the illicit material is considered a second-degree felony. If convicted, Bankston could spend up to three decades behind bars, in addition to mandatory registration as a sex offender, making his details a matter of public record for continuous monitoring, according to Herald-Banner.
The community now waits as the legal process unfolds, with a total bond set at $320,000 for Bankston. The Greenville high school community, entrusted with the molding of young minds, finds itself confronting the haunting question of how well it truly knows those it relies upon to carry out this vital role.
