In an appalling turn of events, Ventura County woman Bryn Spejcher has been pronounced guilty of the involuntary manslaughter of her beau after a marijuana-induced psychotic spell led to a deadly rendezvous. The Ventura County District Attorney's office unleashed the chilling details that pinned Spejcher behind bars after a fraught court battle.
The Thousand Oaks resident, born on January 25, 1991, supposedly reacted violently to a marijuana high when she besieged Chad O’Melia with a flurry of fatal stabs. The couple had been inhaling the substance before the tragedy unfolded on May 27, 2018. Venturing into Mr. O’Melia’s abode that fateful evening, Spejcher's adverse reaction to their shared hits from a bong signaled the beginning of the end. The Ventura County District Attorney's office disclosed that the ensuing cannabis-induced psychotic disorder was the violent precursor to the death of O’Melia, who was found dead in his own blood pool.
Authorities arriving on the grim scene the following morning were met by a harrowing sight: Spejcher, amidst a breakdown, clutched a knife and had inflicted wounds on herself after having already claimed O’Melia’s life. In an attempt to arrest her, Spejcher struck herself with the blade once more. It took a taser’s shock and several baton blows to disarm the frenzied woman, gripping a long-serrated bread knife that was stained with the night's horror.
Spejcher's conviction has been long-anticipated, with Senior Deputy District Attorney Audry Nafziger leading the charge for retribution, declaring, "This was a hard-fought case where the victim’s family had to wait a long time for justice, and I am grateful for the jury’s verdict," as mentioned on the news release by Ventura County District Attorney's office.
