
In a catastrophic event that has marred the holidays for multiple families, six individuals including two children, met their untimely demise in a head-on collision in Johnson County, Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the accident took place around 4 p.m. Tuesday, on U.S. Highway 67 near County Road 1119 near Cleburne.
A minivan carrying a family from Alpharetta, Georgia was heading north when it collided with a southbound pickup truck driven by two teenagers. The truck was in a "no passing" zone when it veered into the oncoming lane, resulting in a tragic crash that snuffed out six lives. The aftermath saw six of the seven people in the minivan killed, including Rushil Barri the 28-year-old driver from Irving, and passengers Naveena Potabathula, 36, Nageswararao Ponnada, 64, Sitamahalakshmi Ponnada, 60, Krithik Potabathula, 10, and Nishidha Potabathula, 9—all hailing from Georgia, according to FOX 4 News.
The sole survivor from the van, 43-year-old Lokesh Potabathula, was left to grapple with critical injuries and the unbearable loss of his loved ones. His wife, two children, and in-laws were among the deceased. The two teenagers in the truck, identified as 17-year-olds Luke Resecker and Preston Glass, also suffered critical injuries and were receiving treatment in Fort Worth hospitals, according to CBS News.
"This was a no passing zone. Will charges be coming because of this crash? It’s too early to say right now. We don’t know what caused the vehicle to cross into the northbound lane," DPS Sgt. William Lockridge stated. Investigators from the crash scene noted that most of the people involved were not wearing seatbelts, which may have affected the devastating outcome, as per FOX 4 News.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Telugu Association of North America has stepped forward to assist the victims' families by arranging the transportation of the remains to India. "Right now, we are authorized by both the families to send the human remains to India," Ashok Kolla, with the Telugu Association of North America, said, expressing the urgency to complete the process within the next 24-36 hours. The highway where the accident occurred was closed for hours for investigation but has since been reopened, per FOX 4 News.
