In an annual display of holiday cheer, Hollywood police officers partnered with retail giant Walmart to host a heartwarming shopping spree for local kids in need, ensuring spirits were high amidst the festive season. Officers took over two dozen children on a shopping adventure on Tuesday, with each child provided with a $200 budget to spend as part of the Shop with a First Responder program.
The shopping event, as reported by Local 10 News, saw children like 8-year-old Cyrus Rodriguez joyfully navigate through the aisles with assistance from officers. Cyrus, among the children, did not just think of himself but also chose gifts for his family, selecting presents for his sister and his best friend, who is none other than his dad.
This year has been particularly trying for the Rodriguez family. In a statement obtained by Local 10 News, Jessica Diaz, Cyrus's mother, shared the emotional weight her family has been carrying. "He's never going to forget today," said Jessica Diaz, the boy’s mother. "My husband had a major stroke last year in September and I think the person it hit the most, who was really tight, was Cyrus." Despite the hardships faced, Diaz referred to the event as a "blessing."
Not only has the shop with a hero initiative bolstered community relations, but it has also ignited aspiration within young minds. As per BollyInside's report, young Cyrus expressed his desire to become a police officer in the future. With such initiatives fostering goodwill between law enforcement and the communities they serve, the sentiment resonates well beyond the holiday season.
The Hollywood Police Department has plans to extend this gesture of goodwill with another spree scheduled later the week in collaboration with Target, aiming to bring yuletide joy to more families.
