Chaos erupted on a Texas highway Wednesday when police took extreme measures to apprehend a stubborn tractor-trailer driver after a lengthy and slow-moving chase. The pursuit, which played out on a highway east of Houston, ground to a halt on Interstate 10, as law enforcement used spike strips to deflate the vehicle's tires, KSAT reported.
Despite his truck being immobilized, the driver, who remained unnamed, appeared uncooperative as he ignored commands to exit the truck, continuing to rev its engine. Authorities circled the vehicle with cruisers and armored units. One tire spun relentlessly, despite being damaged, indicating clear refusal to comply, explained Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez in a statement obtained by ABC News.
The standoff prompted a forceful police reaction as they employed a construction vehicle to dismantle the cab, a tactic followed by releasing a police dog and forcibly removing the driver around 4 p.m. The scene culminated with officers escorting a bloodied man to a stretcher after he was extricated from the wreckage.
Gonzalez remarked that the driver "appeared to be suffering from 'heavy impairment'," but it was still unclear what motivated such erratic behavior. The container being hauled by the eighteen-wheeler was revealed to be empty, adding to the perplexities of the pursuit, as reported by ABC News.
