A 28-year-old man has been placed under arrest and is facing charges following a tragic event that claimed the life of a nine-month-old infant in Houston. The incident occurred on Almeda Road around 5:05 PM last Tuesday, according to the City of Houston News, where the authorities responded to a major vehicle collision.
The suspect, identified as Charles A. Washington, has been charged with manslaughter in connection to the child's death. He faces additional charges for attempting to seize a weapon from a police officer during his arrest. A photo of Washington was included in the news release. The deceased child, who was a passenger in an SUV involved in the crash, has yet to be formally identified by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Homicide Division's own Sergeant N. Lazo and Detective M. Providence discovered an Infiniti SUV, driven by Washington at excessive speeds, hit at least two other vehicles before coming to a stop. Two other juvenile passengers, a 13-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, were also in the vehicle at the time. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries sustained during the incident.
When officers tried to detain Washington, he reportedly turned aggressive and "lunged at officers." According to the report, he was eventually subdued and taken to an area hospital for an evaluation before ending up in the Harris County Jail. The child was transported by Houston Fire Department paramedics to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Washington is now awaiting proceedings in the 263rd State District Court. Further details on the case or any potential motives have not been disclosed at this time.
