A Honduran man has been handed a half-century behind bars for the brutal kidnapping and rape of a 15-year-old girl. Houston resident Wilmer Rivera-Hernandez, 33, received a 600-month sentence after pleading guilty to taking the minor on what began as a date and quickly spiraled into an hours-long ordeal, where he forcefully drugged, sexually assaulted, and abducted her across state lines.
U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani proclaimed Rivera-Hernandez's punishment "deserve the stiffest punishment" for the reprehensible acts he committed against the young girl, detailing the suffering and lifelong trauma inflicted upon her—a transformation from innocence to a world rife with pain and darkness. Taken directly from a statement released on December 4, Hamdani, who has a 15-year-old daughter himself, expressed gratitude toward law enforcement for their efforts in rescuing the victim from this monstrous scenario.
During the sentencing, Judge George C. Hanks Jr. echoed these sentiments, highlighting the gravity of Rivera-Hernandez's actions and his inability to coexist within civilized society. Post-prison, Rivera-Hernandez is facing a lifetime of supervised release and restrictive conditions to prevent any future contact with children and the internet, along with mandatory sex offender registration.
The victim's nightmarish experience began in June 2020 when Rivera-Hernandez, after deceiving the 15-year-old into a date, took her on a menacing ride from Houston to Little Rock, Arkansas. With her family terrified and at a loss, Rivera-Hernandez strangled the teen, seized her phone, and, making it difficult for her to defend herself, forced her to consume alcohol and medication. Fortunately, the young victim managed to access a phone and plead for help before police located them in Knoxville, Tennessee, according to the details laid out in the U.S. Attorney's Office's press release.
Currently detained, Rivera-Hernandez awaits transfer to a federal prison to serve out his long sentence.
