A tragic hit-and-run accident in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood claimed the life of a six-month-old girl being rushed to the hospital for respiratory distress, authorities said. The incident occurred late Friday night, around 9:45 p.m., in the 6300 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Police said the infant's parents were driving her to Comer Children’s Hospital when their Ford was struck by a Chevy SUV that blew through a red light, the girl was transported to the hospital where she ultimately died. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed her identity as Josette Williams, with an autopsy scheduled for Saturday. Meanwhile, a man and woman from the Ford suffered injuries not considered life-threatening and were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, officials noted in statements obtained by the WLS.

The suspects in the Chevy, a man and a woman, fled the scene on foot and as of the latest reports, remained at large. Chicago's Major Accidents unit is actively investigating the crash.

Police have yet to determine if the collision was the direct cause of the child's death.
