
Investigators are probing the death of an inmate at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto who died in custody after being arrested. The Sheriff's Department has confirmed that Corey Bennett, a 50-year-old Adelanto resident, passed away on December 2 due to an unspecified illness, following charges including grand theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.
After being transferred to the detention center from the Victorville Courthouse on December 1, Bennett was suspected of attempting to introduce a controlled substance into the facility and was placed in an observation cell. He fell ill the next morning, and despite immediate medical treatment, he deteriorated and subsequently died at a nearby hospital, according to the Sheriff-Coroner's Department.
The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, led by Detective Ian Gosswiller and Sergeant Michael Warrick, is investigating the circumstances of Bennett's death. The exact cause and manner of death are still undetermined by the coroner’s office, with results pending additional analysis.
