Travelers seem to be tightening their seatbelts and pockets, as John Wayne Airport reports a notable dip in passenger traffic for November 2023. According to the official airport statistics, passenger numbers fell by 5.9% last month to 954,228 compared to the previous year's 1,014,095. Commercial and commuter aircraft operations took a hit too, sliding down by 5.7% and a steep 36% respectively, in comparison with November 2022.
The skies were less frequented by aircraft, seemingly reflecting upon the ebb of travelers. Total aircraft operations for the month at John Wayne Airport decreased to 22,839, marking a 5.7% shrink since last year. Although general aviation still accounts for the lion's share at 64.5%, it also experienced a 4.5% decline from November 2022. However, in the cargo department, an upward trend surfaced with air cargo tonnage rising by 15.8%, suggesting a more active exchange of goods amidst fewer people traversing the skies.
Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Alaska Airlines remained the busiest carriers for the month, ferrying the majority among the close to a million passengers. Detailing the numbers, Southwest Airlines lead with 287,012 passengers, followed by United Airlines at 149,707, and Alaska Airlines closely behind at 148,983. Despite a cooler November, the overall year-to-date statistics for 2023 appear to remain in a state of ascension, up 4.3% compared to last year, with over 10 million passengers served.
The slip in statistics extended beyond domestic borders, hitting international numbers as well. Global travelers to and from John Wayne Airport were fewer by a significant 25.5% reduction in November 2023. Airport officials haven't provided a commentary on the figures, but the statistics stand to starkly represent a market perhaps still catching its breath, trying to fully stand up post-pandemic. John Wayne Airport, nestled in Santa Ana, California, continues to operate as a self-supporting entity, reaching out to over 40 nonstop destinations and serving a significant breadth of passengers and cargo traffic annually.
