A heartbroken family is clinging to the hope of justice after 29-year-old Hyman Lopez Jr. was brutally shot in the head and left to die behind a Culebra Road laundromat on the West Side last month. Nearly four weeks have passed, and the gunman still roams free, with the Lopez family waiting for an arrest that has yet to come.
Hyman Lopez Sr., grappling with the devastating loss of his son, told KSAT, "I just start tearing up. Someone took my son's life. He was very young." The unending grief of a father, forced to bury a child, carries the heavy silence of unanswered questions and elusive closure.
San Antonio Police haven't made much headway despite a security video capturing the incident. As Lopez Sr. earnestly pleaded, "I just hope they catch him or they get some leads," there remains a poignant echo of a father's plea for answers, which Crime Stoppers has attempted to amplify by offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
Adding to this tragic story was Lopez's aunt, Laura Hernandez, reflecting on the harrowing days following the murder, she told KENS 5, "It's just devastating, for the past three days we've just been hoping it's a nightmare." With the victim's mother having passed away years ago, Hernandez stands, rocked by her sister's memory and a grim resolve to support the bereft family.
Lopez Jr., remembered by loved ones for his humor and loving nature, leaves behind two young children and a community stricken by violence. In a torn fabric of community threads, once vibrant but now laced with the ebb of sorrow, the West Side continues to grapple with such senseless loss. "I love him, and I wish we could spend more time with him. I just wish we could hang out some more. I miss him, I miss him a lot," the grieving father lamented, according to KSAT.
The San Antonio Police Department, despite the challenges of having no witnesses and only a single piece of surveillance video, continues to pursue the case. Anyone with information is urged to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 210-224-7867.
