In a case that has rocked the Lee County community, a man faces a heap of trouble after allegedly tossing a 16-year-old Shih Tzu named Xyla into a dumpster; the canine's plight has rallied animal lovers and authorities alike. According to CBS News, 55-year-old Anthony Bellman was slapped with aggravated animal cruelty charges following the grim discovery of the senior dog in a trash receptacle behind a Family Dollar store on December 14.
Dollar store employees were shaken when what appeared to be a normal trash bag began to move, revealing inside a Shih Tzu struggling with a rope around her neck, calling into question the fate she would have met had she not been found, and the Sheriff's office, led by Carmine Marceno, was quick to condemn the act as completely heartless. "This sickens me," Marceno expressed, his disgust evident as he shared the surveillance footage showing Bellman's alleged disposal of Xyla. Detectives learned from the investigation that Bellman had claimed he was taking the dog to the Humane Society to be euthanized, while in reality, he dumped the pet merciless after her original owners had sadly passed away.
After the dog's fortunate rescue and subsequent veterinary treatment, details emerged that if not for the intervention, the elderly Shih Tzu's final moments would have been agonizing, as Marceno detailed, "Hospital examinations determined that Xyla was on her way to a painful death," her last moments would've resembled "drowning from the inside out."
