An early morning encounter in a Walgreens parking lot in Chamblee, Georgia led to police gunfire, with one man left recovering in the hospital. Officers from the Chamblee Police Department initiated a stop on what they suspected to be a stolen car just before 8 am on Thursday, as confirmed by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The stop quickly escalated, ending with an officer discharging their weapon and striking the male driver, details on what exactly provoked the shooting have yet to be disclosed by authorities. The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was promptly transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and is reported to be stable according to 11Alive, but officials have remained tight-lipped regarding not only his condition but also whether the vehicle in question was indeed stolen.
As is standard in such cases, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is independently overseeing. This incident marks the 103rd officer-involved shooting the GBI has examined this year, adding to a significant tally the Bureau is charged with scrutinizing. Both Chamblee police investigators and GBI agents were reported to be on the scene gathering evidence and conducting interviews with at least one witness.
