A string of alarming bomb threats rocked Jewish communities across Massachusetts yesterday, with law enforcement sweeping several synagogues and affiliated institutions following a disturbing wave of potential violence. The Massachusetts State Police, along with their Anti-Terrorism Unit, were deployed to swiftly investigate the threats that, so far, have turned out to be hoaxes.
According to the State Police, a barrage of threatening emails were sent to various Jewish facilities on December 17th. These messages appeared to have originated from the same sender. "Hundreds of similar threats have been received by Jewish institutions across the United States this weekend," State Police spokesperson David Procopio stated in comments obtained by The Boston Globe.
Synagogues in notable locations like Framingham, Tisbury, and Florence found themselves targeted, with bomb squads conducting thorough searches. An event at a Natick synagogue prompted preemptive sweeps, although no threat had been announced there. All searches concluded without the discovery of any explosives or hazards.
In the midst of fear, the community showed resilience. Rabbi Riqi Kosovske of Beit Ahavah in Florence learned about the bomb threat early on Sunday morning, just two hours before a church service, hosted for a different congregation that shares the space, was to nearly begin. Pastor Marisa Egerstrom and Cassandra Holden, a local nonprofit director, consulted with Kosovske and made the decision to hold the service outdoors, near a historical landmark. "It's important to me," Holden emphasized in a statement to The Boston Globe, "that you and your congregation feel safe here."
This series of threats, including a prior one to Beit Ahavah last month, follows a pattern of intimidation tactics seen nationwide following the recent Israel-Hamas conflict. The State Police are diligently working to trace the source of the threats and ensure the security of the Jewish community across the state.
