Bean Town’s sheriffs are stepping up their game with a new online tool that aims to shine a light on the efforts to rehabilitate those who’ve brushed with the law. The Massachusetts Sheriffs' Association (MSA) has launched a public dashboard, providing citizens with a peek into programs designed for individuals who are navigating the justice system. The dashboard, which went live on December 1st, details a range of services geared toward improving the chances of successful re-entry after incarceration.

The initiative is pitched as a move to bolster transparency and keep the public in the loop on what MSA President Nick Cocchi described as work to “send the justice-involved home with better tools for success.” Cocchi said in a statement, as stated by MSA's Official Website.

The system offers a comprehensive look at initiatives taken on by different agencies from 2017 to 2022, highlighting the programming efforts made in accordance with the 2018 Criminal Justice Reform Act. In an industry known for its guardedness, this kind of data sharing is seen as a big step in the right direction. MSA Vice President Patrick W. McDermott emphasized the value of such programs: "This dashboard allows the public to see the breadth and depth of the programming we provide and underscores how the Massachusetts Sheriffs are leading the way in re-entry.", as per MSA's Offical Website.

Accessible at the Massachusetts sheriffs' website, the dashboard breaks down the numbers on enrollment and completion of various evidence-based programs. It's a move that's meant to give the public as well as policymakers enough insight to assess the efficiency and impact of these initiatives. According to the Executive Director of the MSA, Carrie Hill, this is more than just statistics. "The launch of the programming dashboard highlights our commitment to transparency, collaboration, and, most importantly, providing a pathway for the successful re-entry of justice-involved individuals," said Hill. "We are placing a spotlight on the incredible programs provided by the Sheriff’s Offices that are reshaping lives, addressing the root causes, and contributing to positive change.”

The MSA stands behind the Commonwealth's 14 sheriffs, fostering a community where standardized training and operational practices are not just guidelines but directives for making the streets safer. This kind of open-door policy could serve as a model for how law enforcement interacts with the community at large, potentially setting the benchmark for other states to follow.
