The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is carving new trails with its recent launch of a grant initiative that sets out to boost inclusive outdoor activities for underserved communities. Spearheaded by the Healey-Driscoll Administration, the Massachusetts Inclusive and Accessible Outdoor Recreation Events Grant Program intends to dish out $100,000 in support of organizations striving to create and expand outdoor events that can be enjoyed by all, regardless of income, race, or ability.
The Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation (MOOR) will manage the grant program, which marks their first major funding push since the office's inception last year. In a bid to promote an open-arms approach to the state's natural splendors, MOOR Director Paul Jahnige emphasizes the program's twofold benefit, "The creation and promotion of accessible and inclusive events in nature support not only our mental, physical, and social health but the state’s economic health." According to a press release, Jahnige believes that outdoor recreation is quintessential for fostering connections amongst people and with the environment.
Applications are open to a broad range of entities, including non-profits, municipalities, state agencies, and private partnerships, aiming to make a splash in the vibrant world of outdoor recreation. Particulars of the funding stipulate that eligible organizations can win grants upwards of $10,000, which they can channel into a variety of nature-based activities like hiking, boating, and birdwatching, to name just a few. MOOR's selection of awardees is slated for the spring of 2024.
The idea is not just about fun and games; it's a serious economic driver too. Outdoor recreation pumps a massive $11 billion into Massachusetts' local economy, not to mention the creation of over 102,000 jobs and bolstering tourism. Indeed, improving access to natural spaces isn't just about equity in outdoor play; it's also about healthier communities and a nod towards environmental justice. For those looking to put their hat in the ring, the administration has made bid submissions and related documentation available online on their website.
