The Austin Independent School District (AISD) Board of Trustees has settled on one person for the role of superintendent, selecting Matias Segura as the sole contender for the position. During Thursday night’s meeting, the decision to elevate Segura was unanimous, marking a decisive stride forward after a superintendent search that teetered close to the three-year mark. Segura, who became interim superintendent back in December 2022, was handpicked amidst a line-up of six candidates eyed for the job, according to a report by CBS Austin.
After Matias Segura, who took the helm in March, filled the interim role, the AISD board's commitment was demonstrated to him. Previously, the board prolonged the search when elections shook up its ranks, after which they extended Segura's contract through June 30, 2024, KXAN reports. This decision recognized his leadership at a crucial time when the Texas Education Agency had recommended a conservator to oversee AISD’s special education department.
Segura's roots in the district deepen his connection, not just through his tenure beginning in 2018 as the Operations Officer or overseeing its operations in an interim capacity. His familial ties bind him to the district, with children enrolled and a mother who dedicated 42 years of her life to teaching within its classrooms, a detail highlighted by CBS Austin. This appointment brands him as AISD's first "homegrown" superintendent, a point of pride for a district that has experienced a rocky few years at the top.
After settling into the interim position, it was only during the late summer or early fall that Segura began contemplating a permanent place at the district's vanguard. "Now with all the work we’ve done over the last ten months, with the new commitment to each other, I really feel that some of the things we really need to get done will get done in a more efficient manner that aligns with our community values. It’s going to be different for sure," Segura told KXAN, revealing his optimism for the road ahead. The final approval for his superintendency is slotted for late January, when AISD will vote on his contract.
Meanwhile, AISD has expressed that the community will get a chance to weigh in on the decision. Open forums with Segura are scheduled to take place next month, providing an opportunity for public discourse and engagement with the incoming superintendent with the hopes of fostering transparency and trust moving into this new chapter for the district.
