The Mesquite Police Department has notched its 1,000th arrest this year for driving while intoxicated (DWI), a first in its history for single-year busts. On December 19, an unnamed driver became the millennial mark in a campaign to aggressively combat impaired driving—a persistently hazardous issue on Texan roads, according to the Mesquite Police Department.
"This is the first time in the history of our department that we have achieved 1,000 DWI arrests within a single calendar year," the Mesquite Police Department stated. In their drive to make and maintain road safety, authorities are cracking down harder than ever during the holiday season—a notorious period for spikes in DUI offenses. The department's intent is clear: to potentially make the revelers think twice before they decide to drunkenly get behind the wheel.
The indication of Mesquite's tough-on-crime stance comes amidst broader state efforts to curb highway tragedies. Organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have long been advocating for such stringent enforcement. In the words of MADD, the relationship between heavy police presence and the deterrence of would-be drunk drivers cannot be understated. The group has often highlighted the critical role law enforcement plays in protecting public safety and saving lives. In continuation of their advocacy, MADD has repeatedly supported departmental initiatives akin to Mesquite's.
As the holiday cheers threaten to turn into holiday fears, police are ramping up their message: "Our officers remain committed to providing safe roadways through aggressive DWI enforcement," per the Mesquite Police Department: "We wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season!"
