In an early morning showdown in Miami-Dade, police say a car owner took matters into their own hands when they spotted would-be thieves attempting to steal the catalytic converter from their vehicle. According to NBC Miami, the confrontation resulted in an exchange of gunfire shortly before 5 a.m. in a community on Northwest 8th Street. The owner, awakened by the sound of power tools, armed themselves and faced off against the culprits.
Miami-Dade Police Det. Andre Martin revealed that the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, and, fortunately, no injuries were reported. "At this time we do not belive anyone was injured in this incident," Martin said in a statement obtained by NBC Miami. Surveillance footage captured two men tampering with the car before being scared off by the gunshots. Detectives are investigating to see if this incident is connected to another report of a stolen catalytic converter in the same vicinity.
These thefts are part of an ongoing issue in Miami-Dade, with catalytic converters being targeted for the precious metals they contain. A spokesperson for the residents, expressing their frustration, told CBS News Miami, "They're crooks (and) they don't want to work." The device, a part of a vehicle's exhaust system, has become a frequent target for thieves due to the value of the metals inside, which can be sold for a hefty sum.
Det. Martin cautioned residents against confronting criminals directly. He urged the community, "If you witness a crime we encourage you not to engage with the subjects, please call the police and we will be there to assist you in this situation as fast as we can," as reported by NBC Miami. Authorities continue their search for the perpetrators and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
