A 28-year-old woman has been arrested and is facing multiple charges following a deadly vehicle collision in Southwest Miami-Dade, with police alleging she fled the scene after the crash that left one man dead and two critically injured. Dymariz Picon, who resides in the Tamiami area of Miami-Dade County, was taken into custody after authorities say she was driving the pickup truck that struck multiple vehicles and a work van on Friday morning.
According to Local10, the crash happened around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Southwest 92nd Avenue and 21st Terrace. The impact killed Daniel Garcia, 34, who was identified as the passenger in Picon's vehicle. In the aftermath, Picon reportedly abandoned the crash site but was later located and arrested Friday night after confessing to her involvement in the incident.
Authorities were initially in pursuit of the Nissan Titan pickup truck after linking it to a beer theft at the On the Run convenience store, and a Miami-Dade Schools police officer had attempted to stop the vehicle prior to the fatal collision. However, as detailed by NBC Miami, it remains unknown whether the individuals in the truck were connected to the theft. Police did note that an additional unidentified third passenger was in the pickup during the crash.
Video footage obtained from a nearby house showed the harrowing moment of the silver pickup truck and a white work van colliding. "It sounded like a bullet," explained Sebastian Lopez, a local resident who was awakened by the sound of the crash. The two men injured in the work van were identified as Alexis Gonzalez Martinez, 30, and Jose G. Perez Estevez, 26; both were taken to the hospital as trauma alerts.
Picon, described as a "habitual traffic offender" with no license at the time of the crash, is currently held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. She faces numerous charges, including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, and fleeing and eluding, with her bond set at $33,000.
