The Minneapolis-based nonprofit Firefighters for Healing brought joy to the Hennepin Healthcare Burn Center by handing out presents to burn victims for twelve years. Four fire trucks packed with gifts rolled into the healthcare facility, delivering a Christmas surprise to 17 patients and their loved ones.
The gift-delivering effort was a personal mission for Jake LaFerriere, a former Minneapolis firefighter and founder of Firefighters for Healing, who ignited the tradition following his own recovery from severe burns. "My world changed overnight when I survived a backdraft explosion," LaFerriere recalled in a statement given to Express Healthcare Management. "The first Christmas Blessing in 2010 was my way to thank the nurses and Burn Center teams for all they do."
Aside from festive gift-giving, Firefighters for Healing extends its services beyond the holiday season. The charity provides emergency housing and additional aid to families of burn victims and firefighters receiving treatment in the Twin Cities area. Its Transitional Healing Center, complete with 12 suites, offers temporary accommodation as families navigate through the recovery process.
Burn surgeon Jon Gayken, associated with Hennepin Healthcare, noted the significance of the firefighters' gesture. "It just shows not just the patient but the family members of patients that there are people here for you," Gayken said, according to FOX9.
