Minneapolis is poised to close down the Nenookaasi encampment come January 4, amidst escalating safety and health concerns. This decision comes after a fatal shooting earlier this month, prompting the Metropolitan Urban Indian Directors to urge the city for closure due to the increase in violence. The move also aligns with the broader imperative that all community members "deserve safe and dignified housing," according to Minneapolis City of Lakes.
The city's collaboration with Helix Health and Housing Services has resulted in securing housing or shelter for 104 individuals at the encampment, while another 14 are expected to follow suit shortly. In pursuit of safer alternatives for the residents, outreach programs have successfully transitioned 73 people into housing arrangements, as Helix Health contends with culturally sensitive services that address mental health and substance use. Hennepin County's outreach initiatives have accounted for 31 exits from the encampment into emergency shelters or permanent housing. Preceding the planned closure, the programs have been a testament to the partnerships and tireless efforts invested in solving the homelessness crises bedeviling the city, as per Minneapolis City of Lakes.
The city had initially postponed the closure scheduled for December 19, giving leeway for partners to bridge connections between encampment residents and housing opportunities. Despite considering the establishment of a temporary, round-the-clock indoor shelter facility—which was ultimately set aside due to logistical challenges faced by potential service providers—the city, alongside its county and state partners, continues to channel resources to support approximately 45 to 60 individuals in need of supportive housing.
This project, aiming to break ground soon after the purchase is finalized in February, will stand as a new beacon of hope, featuring ample space for office and clinic areas, a commercial kitchen, a small theater, and areas catering to neighborhood partnerships, entrepreneurship, and employment training, reported by Minneapolis City of Lakes.
