The Holm family's leap of joy became the leap to victory as their snapshot clinched the grand prize in a statewide photo contest celebrating 100 years of Texas State Parks. Chosen over 17 other finalists, their photo soared to the top after a public vote, drawing from a massive pool of over 6,000 submissions.
North Texas's own Sam Holm and his kin became the proud recipients of these photographic spoils, which include a Texas State Parks Pass and a hefty $500 gift card from H-E-B courtesy of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation. Not to forget, a VIP curated experience in one Texas state park is also a part of the grand prize. "We took our first jump photo at Enchanted Rock," Holm said in an interview, noting it only took one take at Palo Duro Canyon State Park to perfect their new family tradition.
It's not just the Holms who are over the moon; even the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) expressed gratitude towards all the participants. "We are so grateful to everyone who entered the photo contest," TPWD social media coordinator Whitney Bishop told TPWD. "There are thousands of special moments happening every day at Texas state parks and we feel privileged to be a part of that."
With the contest wrapped up, Texas State Parks are kicking off the next round of activities, including the New Year’s First Day Hikes tradition. As 2023 closes out, the parks are opening up a plethora of new photo opportunities and events such as night hikes, nature walks, and yes, even polar plunges to welcome 2024. Full details on the First Day Hikes and a list of events can be found on the TPWD website.
