A Novato man is facing a barrage of charges after Marin County's Specialized Investigative Unit (SIU) snagged him with a cache of drugs and an assortment of firearms, including an AR-15 rifle allegedly used in a threat incident. Richard Trieber, the accused, was initially arrested for narcotics possession with the intent to sell and carry a concealed, unregistered Glock 9mm.

Digging deeper into the case, SIU detectives executing a follow-up probe stumbled upon evidence linking Trieber to narcotics sales within Marin County. Seizing upon cues from ongoing surveillance, they targeted a Poplar Drive residence apparently serving as the hub for Trieber’s drug peddling operations. With a search warrant for Trieber's residence and vehicle firmly in hand, detectives prepared to swoop in.

However, Novato PD received a criminal threats report positioning Trieber center stage before the warrant could be actioned. Threatening the victim with an AR-15 rifle, Trieber landed himself in deeper water. In a show of interagency cooperation, Novato PD shared their intel, setting the stage for Trieber’s eventual capture.

On December 8, SIU detectives caught up with Trieber on Bellam Avenue in San Rafael, according to a press release from the Marin County Sheriff's Office. Trieber’s home yielded a treasure trove of illegal items; drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, and ketamine, were craftily concealed under a couch cushion alongside a loaded AR-15.

Items confiscated from Trieber’s abode didn’t stop at narcotics and weaponry. Investigators also discovered a hefty ammo stash, a ballistic vest, several high-capacity magazines, drug packaging paraphernalia, and nearly $500 in cash. The Novato PD detective corroborated that the recovered AR-15 matched the rifle brandished during the criminal threats saga. SIU’s haul from Trieber's property was rounded out with a smorgasbord of charges ranging from weapons possession by a felon to drug trafficking while armed.

Richard Trieber now faces a litany of legal troubles, with local agencies mulling over the idea of bringing in federal authorities to potentially push for sterner, federal-level indictments. The SIU, in contact with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), is exploring whether this case might unfold within the broader tapestry of the U.S. Attorney's Office's purview.
