In Novato, the police department's efforts to curb impaired driving led to the arrest of two drivers, one for DUI and another for possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell, during a checkpoint operation last Friday. According to a release posted on Nixle, the DUI checkpoint took place at the intersection of South Novato Blvd. and Sunset Parkway, an area selected based on local statistics of DUI-related incidents.
Out of 378 drivers who were stopped and checked at the DUI checkpoint, in addition to the two arrested, 15 were cited for driving without a license or with a suspended or revoked license. These operations serve as a deterrent designed to take impaired drivers off the roads and thereby increase public safety. Checkpoints are strategic in location, targeting areas with a history of crashes involving alcohol or drug impairment.
The Novato Police Department's checkpoint is part of a wider public safety initiative, reflecting the collaborative efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug-related accidents. According to the press statement by the police department, "DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes," showcasing their proactive approach to preventing such incidents.
The latest checkpoint was made possible through funding provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety via a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This financial backing underscores the sustained commitment to road safety by state and federal bodies and aims to keep the community secure, particularly during times of the year when DUI incidents are known to escalate.
