An early morning crash led to a DUI arrest in Pacifica after local police found a car injury incident near 700 Cabrillo Highway. At around 6:00 a.m. on December 16, officers stumbled upon a vehicle that had seen better days, having collided with several objects in a parking area, according to the City of Pacifica.

The driver, identified as Diogo Zavalacardoso of Moss Beach, was found unconscious at the wheel. Close by, and asleep on the ground, was a woman who required hospitalization for what medics determined was extreme alcohol intoxication. In the wake of the incident, the 21-year-old driver exhibited signs of intoxication, prompting police to undertake a sobriety evaluation.

Pursuing the DUI investigation, officers conducted Field Sobriety Tests (FST’s) with Zavalacardoso, which confirmed suspicions. The results led authorities to book the young man for driving under the influence, as per the City of Pacifica.

Having crashed his vehicle in the parking lot, Zavalacardoso was promptly charged and taken to the San Mateo County Jail. The Pacifica Police Department is encouraging anyone with information about the collision to come forward and help ensure the safety of their streets by reporting suspected impaired drivers immediately to 9-1-1.
