A serene morning turned horrific for residents of the Aberdeen Golf and Country Club in Palm Beach County, Florida, as a local woman witnessed the unsettling scene of a family of ducks she had watched grow being killed on the club's grounds. Janet Pelosi Diamond, a longtime resident of the club, recounted her experience, "I was beside myself at what I was seeing," in a statement obtained by WPTV. The bloodied field where the ducks once roamed marked a stark contrast to the peace of the golfing green.
"I don't think a lot of people know what's going on at the country club," Pelosi Diamond said, documenting the aftermath on camera in shock at the blatant disregard for life. According to the residents, the administrative response to the outcry has been to note the hiring of a licensed trapper to remove what they deem nonnative invasive species. As reported by WFLX, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed that the Muscovy ducks, legally classified as invasive, can be dispatched with non-toxic bullets during daylight hours on private property.
Still, Janet Pelosi Diamond, along with some of her fellow residents, finds the practice vile and unacceptable. "What I saw I thought was just so disgusting, so horrible, for the animals who are struggling to make it and to survive at a beautiful location, and they just turned it into a bloody nightmare," Pelosi Diamond told WPTV. The ducks, familiar and watched over from hatchling to mature birds by residents like Pelosi Diamond, had become an unofficial part of the community.
Pelosi Diamond and a faction of community members are adamant about seeking a more humane resolution, refusing to let the infraction against nature slide without a fight. "It's a lovely place to live, and I want it to stay a lovely way to live," she lamented, highlighting the sense of violation felt by many. The consensus among the unsullied residents is clear—they aim to engage the administration in discussions to demand a humane approach to dealing with the local wildlife. They hope for a remedy that preserves the integrity of their beloved haven without resorting to a bloody spectacle.
