Islam, per the information gleaned from The Florida Bar, has been entrusted with a case where stakes ran high: a client's potential deportation loomed, yet the attorney's advice was for the individual to eschew their court appearance. When the judge probed about the client's whereabouts Islam feigned ignorance claiming he did not know, a move that culminated in a removal order by the absenteeism-irked judge, as per a release echoed by WFLX. Within the justices' decision, the findings were unambiguous: Islam's representation lacked competence, his client communications were insufficient, his case handling lacked diligence, with dishonesty present, and failing to brief the client about the removal order.
As a result of these transgressions, Islam has been handed a one-year suspension, set to take effect after a 30-day grace period following the December 14 court order. The Florida Bar announced disciplinary measures against other legal practitioners too, with five of their number receiving reprimands, twelve getting suspensions, and four seeing their licenses revoked outright—in a significant bid to maintain legal integrity and trust within the Sunshine State's legal system.
