In the clash of Floridian titans, the Florida Panthers narrowly edged out a victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 3-2 score. As reported by Local10, panthers’ forward Sam Reinhart led the offensive charge netting two goals, while goalie Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 27 shots in their Wednesday night face-off at Amalie Arena. This win marks a streak for the Panthers, who have secured back-to-back victories for the first time since early December.
Coach Paul Maurice had a milestone night, joining the ranks of NHL’s most-seasoned coaches by helming his 1,800th game, standing in the company of icons like Scotty Bowman and Barry Trotz. Maurice's stoic presence behind the bench continues to be a driving force for the Panthers as they aim to claw their way back to the top of the conference. He told NHL.com, "They worked hard, they fought hard. We're pretty close to where we want to be."
Defensively, the Lightning felt the absence of defenseman Mikhail Sergachev who was sidelined due to an injury. Despite his absence, Lightning's Andrei Vasilevskiy made an impressive 28 saves. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to stop the Panthers' aggressive offensive play, which saw Aaron Ekblad scoring his first season goal and Aleksander Barkov dishing out three assists, nudging him closer to the Panthers' all-time assist record.
Lightning's forward Nikita Kucherov, despite experiencing an injury scare after taking a stick to the face, managed to score his 300th goal, making him the second-fastest Lightning player to hit this mark, trailing behind Steven Stamkos. "It's a little disappointing to come out of the break at home and to have the state rival beat us on home ice. That's disappointing," lamented Tampa Bay Coach Jon Cooper in a statement obtained by NHL.com.
Bobrovsky shone bright between the pipes, particularly with a pivotal glove save on Brayden Point's breakaway midway through the third period. "It's always a rivalry and it's a great fight. They are a smart team offensively and create good chances. You have to be alert. It's a great opponent and we all bring our best against each other," Bobrovsky told Local10. The Panthers will aim to maintain their momentum as they continue chasing that elusive postseason success.
