A chaotic scene unfolded on a Petaluma sidewalk yesterday evening when a man, previously unresponsive, attacked innocent bystanders with a knife. According to the Petaluma Police Department, the incident occurred around 2005 hours near Ely Boulevard South at Sugarloaf Court and resulted in the assailant's arrest.
Responding to a call about a non-responsive man, later identified as 30-year-old Christian Baker from Santa Rosa, local authorities arrived to find him having regained consciousness and become violent, stabbing two people in the hands and knocking another unconscious with a shove. "Baker, who was still armed with a knife, began chasing the innocent people around," detailed the police report. A struggle followed as courageous bystanders intervened, foiling Baker's apparent intent to further harm the downed victim.
The police, aided by quick-thinking bystanders, managed to subdue and arrest Baker, who displayed signs of alcohol intoxication. A subsequent records check revealed a history of criminal behavior, including an active parole status stemming from a burglary conviction. Baker now faces multiple charges, including three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and obstructing a police officer, in addition to parole violation.
All victims were promptly cared for and transported to local hospitals with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. After receiving sutures, the two who were stabbed were released. "We want to thank all those who stopped and rendered aid," the Petaluma Police Department expressed in their statement. The sentiment highlights a community's bravery in the face of unforeseen violence, extending also wishes for the victims' swift recovery.
