In a crackdown on drunk driving that aimed to discourage even the jolliest revelers, Petaluma's police officers apprehended six intoxicated drivers in a Saturday night operation. The police were out in full force, sending a clear message: if you drink and drive, you'll face consequences. According to a recent police report, the Petaluma Police Department deployed officers from early evening until near dawn, specifically targeting individuals who made the unwise choice to drive after consuming too much alcohol.
Their efforts yielded results. Between 7:00 PM and 2:30 AM, six drivers were arrested for allegedly operating their vehicles under the influence of alcohol. Five of these drivers were caught exceeding the legal alcohol limit of 0.08%, with three blowing over twice that limit. Notably, one of them, a 20-year-old individual not yet of legal drinking age, was found with a 0.06% alcohol level and caught red-handed driving while consuming alcohol.
The group of intoxicated drivers included one individual who made a costly swerve, trading their vehicle for a power pole and causing a blackout from the Petaluma Outlets to Lakeville St. This crash turned the lights out, quite literally, on the evening's festivities for a portion of the town.
Petaluma's law enforcement is not only focused on apprehending offenders but is also on a mission to prevent the dangers of mixing alcohol and the road. They emphasize that driving under the influence is dangerous and avoidable, urging those who plan to drink to hand over their keys to someone less intoxicated. If you witness erratic driving, they advise you not to hesitate and to call 911 to let them handle the situation.
The Petaluma Police Department's operation was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, channeled through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For media inquiries, please contact Lt. Garrett Glaviano at [email protected] or call 707-778-4372.
