A recent DUI checkpoint operation on December 15 led to the arrest of 24 individuals, as reported by the department. The checkpoints were strategically set up on E. Washington St. and Petaluma Blvd., targeting areas known for traffic incidents and impaired travelers.

DUI checkpoints, a regular part of efforts against reckless driving, have proven effective in reducing DUI-related incidents. Petaluma police screened 443 vehicles at these two key locations, aiming to curb the city's issues with intoxicated drivers. Despite the majority of drivers passing through without issue, 24 individuals faced arrest, according to Sergeant Walt Spiller of the Petaluma Police Department.

At the first location, over 300 vehicles were inspected, resulting in seven drivers facing trouble due to license issues. The second checkpoint, overseeing just over a hundred vehicles, led to seven DUI-Alcohol arrests, one DUI-Drugs arrest, and another for a DUI warrant. Additionally, eight more individuals were arrested for license-related offenses. A routine patrol outside the checkpoints also nabbed another DUI offender.

Petaluma, known for its hospitality and good times, emphasizes the importance of avoiding driving after consuming alcohol. The Petaluma Police issued a stern warning that "Driving Under the Influence is 100% preventable," reflecting a pragmatic approach focused on the safety of the city's streets and its residents. First-time DUI offenders could face fines of up to $20,000 and the added consequence of a suspended license.

Collaboration with the Sonoma County Probation Department and California State Park Rangers, made possible through funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety, played a crucial role in the success of these operations. The Petaluma Police express gratitude to their partners, acknowledging their collective effort in preventing drivers from experiencing the severe consequences of impaired judgment.
