It's a holiday operation of epic proportions in Pompano Beach, where the community and local authorities have banded together to brighten Christmas for kids who might otherwise go without. A traditional event that started with a single teacher handing out gifts from their car has exploded into a massive toy giveaway managed by the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue Benevolent Christmas Express. This year, the event grew to such an extent that organizers had to rally three U-Haul trucks to hold all the donated toys, ready to be handed out to eager children on Christmas morning.
According to CBS News Miami, the express, led by the blaring sirens from the Pompano Beach Fire Department, is an annual spectacle that draws families from all around, and "Twane Dobards" told the news outlet, "It's just a blessing to give back to the kids." And for the children receiving the gifts, like 3-year-old Airah, it's the simple things that count: "I got a blanket and unicorn," she said. Meanwhile, firefighter Kori Christmas, a second-generation leader of the Christmas Express initiative asserted, "It's all about giving, it's not about receiving the gifts and all the expensive things."
Local businesses and organizations, including the Benevolent Association and Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), threw their support into the event, gathering over $20,000 in toys for the giveaway. "This is actually, probably one of our biggest years," Kori Christmas said in a WSVN interview.
Volunteers like Kathy Olivia also play a pivotal role in the success of these endeavors, who, hoisting a gigantic teddy bear destined for a young child, said, "The look on these kids faces, and the parents, let me tell you, for me, it’s the parents and the grandparents and the aunts because they’re watching and you can see they couldn’t give their kids something that we’re blessed enough to help, and it’s amazing." The effort is not just about the presents; rather, it serves as a testament to the community spirit and generosity that defines Pompano Beach.
Gratitude was the order of the day during the toy giveaway, with residents expressing their thanks as their children clutched new toys with broad smiles. "The kids are grateful when I see their faces," Henry told WSVN. "They’re happy because it’s just not getting little toys, they giving out big toys." Indeed, the Pompano Beach Christmas Express has, once more, delivered a dose of holiday magic for those in need.
