San Antonio's landscape opened the Red Berry Hike and Bike Trailhead at the IH-10 gateway to the historic Red Berry estate. As reported by KSAT, the city's Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails system is stitching together the Salado Creek Trail with the serene Red Berry Lake in what's hailed as the crowning phase of the Red Berry Redevelopment.
This project is an 85-acre swatch of land, polishing the Red Berry Mansion back to its former shine, the estate formerly owned by early 20th-century business maven Virgil E. "Red" Berry now operates proudly under The RK Group's purview, a culinary and hospitality titan that's both headquartered on the premises and renting out the mansion for events with gusto. The trailhead itself can be spotted at 4039 IH-10 Westbound Frontage Road.
As per insights from Poznecki-Camarillo Inc. (PCI), the estate's grounds underwent a comprehensive environmental assessment back in 2018 where an archaeological survey spanned 84 acres—this due to the sniff of federal grant funds necessitating federal clearance nods for the estate's transformation, including a pedestrian bridge, the all-important parking lot for the event-laden mansion, and lakebed stabilization along with drainage beef-ups.
