It's that time of the year for holiday joy, and San Diego is bringing festive cheer to its parks and recreation centers with a sleigh full of Winter Festival events. These free, family-friendly activities include snow play, crafts, and a cozy cookie session with Santa.
According to the official city announcement, Andy Field, Director of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department, shared, "The holiday season is the perfect time for families to join in the wide variety of festive activities our Parks and Recreation Department team has planned." The festivities will run from December into January, kicking off with Winter Wonderland at Ocean Beach Recreation Center. Scripps Ranch Recreation Center will host a Winter Movie in the Gym, and several locations, including Willie Henderson Sports Complex and Silver Wing Recreation Center, will feature Cookies with Santa.
For kids feeling down about missed letters to Santa, Golden Hill Recreation Center offers a Winter Carnival, and the Memorial Recreation Center provides a chance to pitch last-minute gift lists over brunch. Additionally, toy distributions at Silver Wing and City Heights recreation centers are part of the Toys for Tots program, bringing joy to many children.
If you're in the mood for holiday shopping beyond reindeer games, AgeWell Services is hosting an annual craft sale in Balboa Park this weekend. The sale, featuring everything from jewelry to handmade trinkets, will occur at Casa del Prado Patios A & B and Room 101 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on December 16 and 17, with kiddie activities for parents to shop in peace.
While the halls are being decked and carols sung, let's not forget Santa's helpers at San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department. They oversee over 40,000 park assets, including parks, shorelines, recreation centers, pools, skate parks, and golf courses. To find the full list of Winter Festival events, visit the city's recreation center webpage or check with your local recreation center for details.
