Holiday travelers better buckle up for a bustling seasonal rush at the San Diego International Airport. The hub is bracing for a flood of more than 700,000 people between the Christmas and New Year's Day periods. With Saturdays, December 23 and 30, expected to be the most hectic, officials advise flyers to get their ducks in a row for a smooth takeoff.
For those not keen on missing their holiday flights, the airport suggests key tactics to ensure timely departures. Planning to arrive at least two hours before boarding is wise, especially given the construction snarls around Terminal 1. In a statement obtained by the airport's news release, expect the curbside to bustle most from 4:00 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and from 8:00 p.m. to midnight.
What's more, with parking at a premium due to the construction of a new Terminal 1 parking structure, travelers are urged to book their parking spots in advance. The Terminal 2 Parking Plaza remains open and ready for reservations, as is the valet option, details of which can be found on the airport's official website.
Remember, once parked in the Terminal 2 Parking Plaza but flying from Terminal 1, the Terminal Loop Shuttle will ferry you. Offered as a courtesy by the airport, this shuttle helps navigate the gap. For those who opt for the eco-friendlier route, the San Diego Flyer—a free electric bus shuttle—connects the Old Town Transit Station to the airport with the promise of a 20 to 30-minute ride, running from the wee hours of the morning until just after the stroke of midnight, the airport advises.
For drop-offs and pick-ups, taxis and rideshares might be just the ticket. To avoid the headache of traffic, head straight to the Cell Phone Lot situated in the Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road; it's the perfect staging ground to await your arriving guests, accessible from 5 a.m. until the terminal's midnight close.
The holiday spirit even permeates the air within the terminal walls, where you can shop, dine, and soak in seasonal cheer. According to airport officials, travelers can anticipate live musical performances, circus acts, and holiday-themed menus throughout December.
