The San Diego County Sheriff's Department Regional Crime Laboratory is beefing up its fight against impaired driving this holiday season, courtesy of a hefty $517,374 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). This financial boost will go toward adding two new full-time crime lab criminalists and upgrading training to enhance their analyses and expertise.
According to a press release from the San Diego Sheriff's Department, this "gift from Santa himself" is not all about the festive cheer. It's a serious endeavor aimed at keeping DUI offenders off the streets and ensuring safer travel for everyone. During the last grant period, average blood alcohol levels in DUI arrests were more than twice the legal limit.
Deputy Tinsel, jokingly dubbed the crime lab's Elf on a Shelf, might be peeking at advancements in technology. But the real focus is on enhanced DUI sampling analysis, where the lab has already tested 1,944 samples from October 2022 through September 2023. Notably, 55% of the arrested individuals had alcohol and at least one additional impairing drug in their system, with cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl being the most common.
The crime lab serves over 30 law enforcement agencies and processes upward of 6,000 traffic safety cases annually, offering a sobering reminder of the prevalence of impaired driving. As the holiday season rolls in, the Sheriff's Department advocates for celebrating responsibly. The press release insists, "We all have someone special waiting for us at home. Let's make sure we all get there safely."
The funding, which flows through September 2024, not only underscores a commitment to public safety but stands as a component of a broader, national effort supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
