After doling out classic American fare for over 70 years, the iconic Chili Dog Stand in San Marcos has cooked up its last helping of chili dogs. The beloved local hotspot shuttered its windows on Saturday, Dec. 30, marking the end of an era for comfort food enthusiasts. "It is with sincere regret that we inform you that Chili Dog Stand will be closing permanently on Saturday, December 30th," a statement released by the management on their official Facebook page.
The tough decision to turn off the grills was not easily reached by the owners, who expressed a mix of pride and thankfulness for the decades of patronage. "We are extremely proud of all that we have accomplished through the years," the Facebook post also said. "We will always be thankful for your and your family’s past business and support." Over the farewell weekend, a throng of customers lined up to savor one last taste of the stand’s signature dogs and chili pies.
In a letter shared by a customer on Facebook and subsequently reported by MySA, the owners stated that closing the stand was a regretful decision. "We hope that we have been successful in offering quality, homemade food and painting excelled customer service," they wrote. MySA also sought to confirm the closure directly with the Chili Dog Stand.
While specifics on what prompted the closure remain undisclosed, the sentiments echoed by the owners resonated with the community who have watched San Marcos transform over the decades. According to a CBS Austin report, hundreds showed up to the stand before it permanently closed, signaling a long-standing bond between a local eatery and its locality. Customers who grew up visiting the stand now say goodbye to a piece of their personal and communal history.
