The Santa Monica City Council is all set to turn Douglas Park's play area into a kid-friendly wonderland after giving the green light to a major playground overhaul. Per a report from Santa Monica's official press release, this upgrade ensures that kids of all abilities can have a blast in an inclusive environment, marking it as the fifth universally accessible playground to grace the city.
Slated to break ground in 2024 and wrap by summer 2025, the project is part of the city's Clean & Safe initiative. Mayor Phil Brock said, "I'm thrilled to see this project kick off in the coming months," according to the city's press announcement.
Santa Monica stages two community workshops where locals can chime in with their ideas. The first meet-up throws down the gauntlet with potential designs and themes, ensuring the final blueprint is a real crowd-pleaser.
The second workshop is planned for summer 2024, where the playground plan will be presented before construction starts in the spring of 2025. "I look forward to seeing the first concept designs," the mayor beamed.
