Authorities clamped down on impaired drivers in a DUI checkpoint sting that saw hundreds of motorists scrutinized by the eagle-eyed San Diego County Sheriff's deputies on Friday night. The operation, which unfolded in the 8700 block of Fanita Drive from 8:00 p.m. to midnight, was part of an ongoing campaign to sober up the city's streets and put the brakes on drivers under the influence.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, 525 vehicles were screened with 35 nudged to a secondary evaluation, out of which only a pair faced DUI evaluations, leading to one DUI alcohol arrest, and no drug-related DUI arrests surfaced. Moreover, drivers were hauled up for license-related violations, including six citations for unlicensed vehicle operation, two for suspended licenses, and a lone provisional licensee busted for carting minors around.
The department is beefing up its presence on the roads until New Year's Day, part of a wider "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.
The checkpoint and patrols are financially fueled by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), ensuring deputies can keep vigilant watch.
