The University of California, San Diego, has achieved a significant feat. The Clarivate 2023 Highly Cited Researchers list places UC San Diego at the forefront of the University of California system and seventh globally for its number of influential researchers. The institution boasts 71 leading scholars in various disciplines, establishing its prominence in academic circles.

Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla stated, "UC San Diego’s recognition as No. 1 for most highly cited researchers within a University of California—and No. 7 in the world—are prestigious honors highlighting the broad impact and influence of UC San Diego in the global research community." The entire UC system, impressively, features 317 faculty and scientists recognized among the world's top one percent in their respective fields, as per UC San Diego News Center.

Across California, UC San Francisco, UC Berkeley, and UCLA also shine in the top 50, securing the 11th, 15th, and 20th spots, respectively. UCSD's climb to seventh globally, up from eighth the previous year, is particularly noteworthy.

Despite being relatively new, UC San Diego, founded in 1960, has swiftly ascended the academic ranks. The university has invested $1.76 billion in research for fiscal 2023, marking a 74% increase from a decade ago. These achievements are complemented by high placements in other rankings, such as 21st in the Nature Index for scientific impact and 4th among public U.S. universities in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities, as noted in a report by the UC San Diego News Center.

Clarivate's 2023 list acknowledges not just the quantity but also the quality of contributions from scholars like Rob Knight, who holds three HCR distinctions. Knight and his UCSD colleagues are not only advancing research but also fostering successful startups. This year, there are 7,125 Highly Cited Researcher designations shared among 6,849 unique individuals, some recognized across multiple research areas.
