Miami's Nicklaus Children's Hospital became a hub of holiday joy as 60 children with cancer, including a young girl named Genesis, who was diagnosed with a tumor in March, and their siblings received their holiday wishes this past Sunday. Genesis, whose progress in treatment has become a beacon of hope for her family, was one of the many children who experienced a much-needed respite from the harsh reality of illness.
“Our daily life revolves around them or the sick children,” said Genesis' mother, Aylina Mejia, according to a Betulia News report, “and sometimes we forget that we have a life, and only focus on them.” The festivities included gifts, activities, and even a visit from Santa, all aimed at bringing normalcy and joy to families facing unimaginable challenges.
Ryan Esko, the founder of Jjuntos Regalando Sonrisas, the charity responsible for the event made clear that their mission was to meet the children's specific desires. "Especially with this event, we try to make sure every child gets what they ask for," Esko revealed in an interview obtained by CBS News Miami. These efforts include gifting the children's siblings to ensure no one felt neglected during the season of giving.
From taking photos with Santa to receiving hugs from Apollo, the service dog, the children were able to engage in holiday activities that allowed them to "forget that they are sick, that they are getting needles, that they are getting all of that, and that they are just happy," Mejia told CBS News Miami. This partnership between Jjuntos Regalando Sonrisas and Nicklaus Children's Hospital marked its eleventh year, continuing a tradition of spreading cheer among families fighting pediatric cancer.
